INFORMATION & INSTRUCTIONS(For PhD)


  • A Master’s degree or equivalent from a recognized university/institute with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a subject related to the PhD discipline to which applied. Those otherwise eligible vide section 3 of the UGC notification notified vide F. No. 1-3/2021 (QIP) shall also be eligible to apply.
  • ii. PG 4 th semester students are also permitted to apply for admission into the PhD program. However, their candidature will be considered subject to the fulfilment of the minimum eligibility criteria.
  • A relaxation of 5% in marks will be applicable to candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/PWD, EWS, and other such categories as specified in case of admission in an institution under Government of Assam.
  • While determining the eligibility of a candidate subject to conditions i., ii. And iii. above, grace marks or points awarded in the qualifying examination, if any, will not be counted.
  • An entrance test of 70 marks will be conducted for admission into the PhD program. Candidates securing 50% marks or above in the entrance test will qualify to appear for personal interview/viva voce of 30 marks to be conducted separately for each department/centre.
  • The entrance test syllabus shall consist of 50% research methodology and 50% subject-specific content.
  • Candidates qualified for fellowship/scholarship in UGC NET/ UGC-CSIR NET/GATE, ICMR, DBT examinations, and similar national-level examinations, shall be allowed to appear directly in the personal interview/viva-voce. In their case, selections shall be on the basis of their performance in the interview only.
  • Candidates who qualify NET in Category 2 or Category 3 in the NET examination of June 2024 or later will be exempted from the entrance test.
  • The Cotton University entrance test/NET score carries 70% weightage while the personal interview shall carry 30% weightage in the final selection of candidates.
  • Candidates who have cleared NET or SLET in the related discipline, may be eligible for a 5% relaxation in the qualifying marks of the entrance test.
  • All candidates, including the candidates exempted from entrance test subject to points vii. and viii., must apply for admission into the selection process.
  • Candidates will be shortlisted for admission into the PhD program considering the number of declared vacancies by the department, research interest of the candidates and performance in the interview. The university reserves the right to not fill up vacant seat(s) if suitable candidates are not found.
  • All selected research scholars must comply with the conditions of the PhD program. Attendance of PhD Course work classes is compulsory for all research scholars. Scholars with less than 75% attendance shall be debarred from appearing in the PhD course-work examination.

The minimum eligibility condition for admission to PG Programmes of Cotton University is a Bachelor's Degree with Honours/Major from a recognised university and LLB degree for LLM. Honours/Major is not required for admission to MCA and LLM Programme. Candidates are requested to carefully read the Onscreen Instructions and follow the procedure while filling up the online form.

  • Gap in Study under OPEN CATEGORY: Students passing the qualifying examination or other degree/diploma examination (under recognized institution) earlier than the current year will have to submit a self-declaration testifying his/her activities during the interim period. Candidates having more than 3 (three) years of Study Gap (i.e. passed the qualifying examination before 2021) shall not be eligible for admission, except for the LLM Programme in which there is no restriction on the gap period.
  • SCHEME OF WAIVER OF ADMISSION FEE/ TUITION FEES ETC. OF GOVT. OF ASSAM: The scheme of Waiver of Admission Fee/Tuition Fees etc. shall be offered if an order to its effect is issued by the Government of Assam, applicable for the academic year 2024-25. Fee waiver shall not be applicable for self-financing programmes.
